Dr. Bryan Mendelson (FRACS) Awarded For Excellence In Surgery
On May 10th 2021 as part of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons 89th Annual Scientific Congress, held at The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Dr. Bryan Mendelson was presented with the Excellence in Surgery Award.

Dr. Bryan Christopher Mendelson is one of Australia’s most awarded Plastic Surgeons.
After receiving his medical degree from Monash University in 1968, he undertook advanced training in Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA and New York University Hospital in 1977. He returned to Melbourne in 1978 and completed his Australian Fellowship.
Bryan’s original research into facial anatomy represents a paradigm shift in the way surgeons view the ligamentous support structures of the face. This anatomical understanding allows for new safer surgical techniques, with reduced recovery times and decreased operative morbidity. He has published 55 papers in internationally peer reviewed Journals and written 17 book chapters for titles including Gray’s Anatomy and Neligan’s textbook of Plastic Surgery. Bryan has given almost 150 scientific presentations and masterclasses internationally. These have garnered numerous awards, including the Raymond Vilain Award from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) which Bryan has received an unprecedented four times.
With the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Bryan has established the Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course. Bryan shares this knowledge passionately, teaching hundreds of Fellows in Plastic Surgery. The Course has attracted surgeons from over thirty countries to Melbourne and is regularly part of the American Meeting. His lifetime of scientific achievement and commitment to education and excellence has reflected prestigiously on Australian Plastic Surgery, and surgery in general.
Bryan was President of the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) in 2006 – 2008, the only Australian to hold this position. He was a Board Member of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons from 2000 – 2006.
A family man, Dr. Mendelson is a modest and unfailingly kind person, who gives of himself freely and whose life is devoted to others including his staff. Australia has been the beneficiary not just because of his work but also because his manner reflects the best Australian traditions of courtesy and humility.
